Sandwip is an island (Sandwip Samodra Soikot) of Chittagong district located in the Bay of Bengal on the southeast coast of Bangladesh. It is located at the mouth of Meghna river. It is a very ancient island of Bangladesh. 

Every place in Sandwip is worth visiting – fields full of crops, green nature, haats, markets, everything. You can easily visit all parts of the island from north to south. In the north of the island, you can see the hundred-year-old Maryam Bibi Sahebani Mosque, built on the model of the Taj Mahal. There is a big dighi, shrine adjacent to the mosque. In the south of the island is the traditional Shukna Dighi. Besides, there are numerous mosques, schools, madrasas, big playgrounds. If you are lucky, you can see the Baul Zari Sari song show. Amanula char to the north of Sandwip, Uri char to the northeast, Kalapani to the south, Kaliya char to the south can be visited. Sandwip is an ideal place for camping which is the hottest topic of the present time. It will be very fun/enjoyable. In this case, you can take the help of locals to select a suitable place. Pick the right spot and set up your tent, accompanied by twinkling stars at night, the sound of the river under the open sky.

The best time to go camping is winter, the foggy nights can be easily passed. The people of the island are very friendly and cooperative. Besides, you will get all the daily essentials easily. You can prepare food by market yourself. You will find everything from river fish, meat to winter cakes in the markets. And the most delicious food of winter season is date juice cinni. Besides, you can eat the famous sweets of the island, for that you have to go to the Shiva Hut in the south of the island.

Gradually the size of this island has been reduced to an island of 80 square miles by the erosion of the river and the sea. It is known that in the fifteenth century its size was 650 square miles. In this way, one day this island may be lost under the sea.

Accommodation/Where to Stay in Sandwip

There are 2/1 hotels at the Enam-Nahar junction in the main town area of Sandwip. Also further up in the Senerhat area is a good quality hotel. Besides, you can stay in Dak Bungalow of Upazila Parishad (Mahmudur Rahman 01811341722) with permission. There are quite a few quality food hotels in the upazila so you don't have to worry about food.     

How to go to Sandwip?

Sandwip on the river route from Dhaka Launches leave Sadarghat three days a week at 9 a.m. for Sandwip. At present there will be a little problem in this journey, you may feel bored. One of the reasons for this is the char rising in the west of Sandwip. Due to which it will take a long time and trouble to get up and down.

Sandwip by road from Dhaka

Board any Dhaka-Chittagong long distance bus to Sandwip by road. The crocodile must come down. Ask your bus to drop you at the Kumira Steamer Ghat Jai stand. From there take auto or rickshaw to Kumira Steamer Ghat. From here you have to go by water through Sandwip Channel to Guptachara Ghat of Sandwip. This waterway is the only route from the mainland to Sandwip.

Sandwip by road from Chittagong

Crocodiles can come directly from any place in Chittagong city. Easy and time saving taxi can be hired. The maximum cost will be 200 to 250 taka. Kumira Ghat to Sandwip

Speedboats are one of the modern modes of transportation to and from the island. This speedy vehicle will take you to the island in just a few minutes. In this case, you have to pay 350 taka. There is joy in this journey and time will be saved. You don't have to deal with the problem of getting up and down. If you have more than one partner, you can rent a boat. If you have one or two people, it is better to go normally. For that you have to go to Kumira Sandwip Ghat. There are two other ghats but this is the best way to go to Sandwip town.

Launch/Trawler (made of wood more like a boat) can go from Kumira Ghat to Sandeep. There are passenger portable launches, as well as cargo-carrying launches. It will save time and cost less. There will be some problem in getting up and down. There is joy in this journey, but the joy may be lost because of the extra passengers and cargo.
